You will visit the Holy of the Holies of the dramatic art –
the first Russian theatre named after F.Volkov (the founder of the
first Russian theatre). Everything here is imbued with a spirit of an
old theatre performance under the auspices of Melpomene. According
to the legend the history of the theatre dates back to a leather
barn, in which two and a half century ago Fyodor Volkov, a young son
of a merchant, together with his brothers and friends arranged first
performances of his troupe. Later Fyodor built a special building for
the theatre, made costumes, theatre scenery. Rumours about young
residents of Yaroslavl reached Empress Elizabeth of Russia, who later
called them to Petersburg… Since that time Yaroslavl “theatre
mansion” on the bank of the Volga has been considered to be the
root, out of which the Russian national professional theatre has
grown up. By the end of the XIX century the Yaroslavl theatre was
famous in all parts of Russia not only as the oldest but also as one
of the best ones. In 1900 there were held festivities in Yaroslavl
dedicated to the 150 anniversary of the Russian theatre, and in 1911
a building was constructed according to architect Spirin’s
project, in which The Volkov Theatre is situated to this day. You
will be led behind the enigmatic scenes, know how theatre scenery and
costumes for performances are made, visit the stage and will be able
